No Dice Collective Composer Call Out

Home of the Five Minute Form™

The opportunity (August 2019)

Following the success of our first collaboration with The Writing Squad on ‘Last Christmas’ in December, we are back with a brand new collaboration, this time working with the International Anthony Burgess Foundation’s archive collection.

We are looking for five composers who are keen to collaborate with writers and respond to an item picked from the Anthony Burgess archive. Previous response types include film, two person scenes, spoken word, poetry, and pre-recorded voice samples.

The chosen composers from the call-out will be given free choice of instrumentation from our line-up (see below), and around 10 minutes to pair their writer’s words with music. Following submission, the pieces will be workshopped, rehearsed and performed for our next concert on December 7th at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation in Manchester.

Our line-up is string quartet, flute, clarinet, piano, percussion. If you’d like to learn more about us before applying, please check our Facebook page for videos and previous projects, or email [email protected].

What previous composers have said about working with us

“No Dice sparked my interest in collaborating with other art forms such as poetry and theatre. I had a hugely fruitful experience working with the artists and musicians and enjoyed both projects immensely. I also came out of them with some professional-standard audio and video content which is like gold dust for an emerging composer!”
Anna Disley-Simpson

“I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the process as well as how great the night was. May No Dice continue to excel!”
Rory Johnston

About us

Made up of graduates from the University of Manchester and RNCM, No Dice Collective commissions and performs new music. In our four years of existence, we’ve commissioned over 40 pieces, worked with 6th form students on a 3 month composition project, and self-produced a CD. We’ve had several sell-out performances around Manchester, collaborated with top young writers from The Writing Squad, debuted Anthony Burgess’ work and performed at Kendal Calling festival. We strive to be the kind of new music ensemble we want to see in the world.
